Selected Poems of DONG Xiao

Translated by REN Chenggang
Stone in the Snow
It feels cold because the fire inside has not been lit up
Like a practicing Buddha, it is
motionless
I gaze at it, in silence,
Trying to find the eyebrows, lips and earlobes it
should have or a Buddhist chant or hymn hidden in its heart
I also wondered why so many people passed it
but not a single person paid attention to it
It must harbor a secret nobody knows
Sitting on the ground for years
It seems to be waiting for someone
To start a clean white conversation up close?
Of course I'm not that person, I’m just so close looking at it
Who is, after a knife-slayer's calmness, another face
The Stone Statue
After being cut by a ghost’s axe
And ground by time
The stone is able to speak
Yet I don’t understand
Only from the moss in the stone cracks
I can identify that it is from the Southern Land
The home of silk and satins
But it has no fancy dress on
Only the muddy face ever abandoned by dirt
Rough with deep wrinkles, simple and unadorned,
Like an old farmer
Who lacks a palm-bark rain cape
And a straw hat to shade the sun
It has never been quenched, but the real flame
Toward me gushes out of a hose
Yet its whole body is stuck in the shadow of the temple
So I am able to gradually get close
Brake
I've fallen into sleep, yet the brake is still shrieking
My body still moving forward
The dark of the whole world
And all sorts of oddities still flooding toward my face
And the wind, a huge container,
Filled with everything, still flooding toward my face
I'm lying on the ground, squashed flat
Leaving them lurking or growing, even
Forming a new scar inside me
For all that, the braking is obviously useless
A Fallen Leaf in the Snow
A leaf is lying on the snow
It seems so empty and vast
Around, there is nothing similar to it
Even the same rotten black color
Like a corpse it is lying
More like a period abandoned by the world
It can't make a living, nor can it make a dying
But it has to lie there, in company with purity
It has to remain black as well, for the spotless pure white
It even
Has to constantly appear trivial, wretched, and pathetic
Finally it watches the white cover its face
And becomes a leaf with a fresh and fair surface
My Heart Keeps Tightening Like a Screw
Early in the morning, I heard one of my buddies
Died!
My heart tightened
Just yesterday we were chatting on the phone, and making a date
Thinking of her voice... my heart tightens again
When we played games in childhood, she was my little lady
Thinking of this, my heart screws even tighter!
Then I think of that separation: for decades
We had heard nothing from each before just getting in touch
My heart keeps tightening
Just like a screw that wrings the left atrium and the right into one
making me unable to tell the left from the right
